Also known in English as Absolute Boyfriend, I first heard of this series from Alex via Facebook. A Google search revealed that the lead character is a robot designed to be the perfect lover. My first thought was that it was a male version of the manga-turned-anime series Chobits by CLAMP. And remembering the scene when the lead character activates the robot got me curious enough to see how this series would go. *ahem ahem* But seriously, I started wondering how they would tackle the issue of the love between a human and a robot.

This drama was based on the manga series created by Yuu Watase, but has an entirely different story altogether. They decided to retain the names of the characters from the manga, but this time they are working in a patisserie. I am glad that they decided on adult characters instead of high school students like in Yuu Watase’s work. This enabled the writers of the drama to go in-depth with the concept of love.

The story revolves around Izawa Riiko, a temporary worker from the Asamoto company and an aspiring patissier. She was chosen to test the new robot-lover invention, Tenjou Night. There are lots of funny antics in the series, courtesy of Night trying to win Riiko’s love. On the other hand, Riiko is in love with her boss, Asamoto Soushi. Turns out that he also likes Riiko, but failed to express his emotions because of the presence of Night.

What I liked about the drama is their treatment on the friendship between Mika and Riiko. In the manga, Mika was forgotten after she revealed her true colors in front of Riiko. In the drama, however, they managed to retain her character until the very end. The tangled love lives of Mika, Night, Riiko and Soushi made the drama more entertaining and more endearing. The last scene was really heartbreaking, when Night was recording his farewell message for Riiko.

Another thing I liked about the drama were the special episodes they released around April of this year. Three years after Night’s “death” and after Riiko was engaged to Soushi, Night came back to Riiko’s life. He lost his memories, having given his memory chip to Riiko before he ‘died’ during the last episode of the series, but managed to regain those memories. And if you think that the series had a really sad ending, it was nothing compared to the ending of these special episodes.

Now I wonder if there will come a time when human beings will be able to create robots like Night in the future. And after seeing this drama, would we want to?
