This is one of the reasons why I haven’t blogged for a while now. It’s the game Restaurant City in Facebook (RC for short) by Playfish. I can’t help it, this game is really addicting.

The game is quite simple. Your task is to run your own restaurant. You can hire your Facebook friends to work for your restaurant as cooks, waiters and cleaners. You can buy items to make your restaurant more attractive to customers. Since it runs on Facebook, you can visit your friends’ restaurants and trade ingredients with them.

Why is it so addicting? A friend once told me that it awes him to watch his online self acting very busy in the restaurant. For some, they enjoy designing the layouts of their own restaurants. For me, I enjoy trading ingredients to create high level dishes. Why, I have lots of Facebook friends right now for the sole purpose of this game. You get a free ingredient for your first visit to a person’s restaurant, and you have higher chances of finding the ingredients you need if there are more people playing the game.

What is quite annoying with this game is the fact that they have frequent downtimes for server maintenance. After all, they are still in beta. But they try to make up for it by introducing new features when the game is back online. For instance, the toilets and the inside walls are relatively new features. The latest feature they added is the ingredients market, which is a big help for us who want to make the dishes reach level 10.

Another thing that is a bit annoying is the scarcity of the ingredients. They rate the ingredients from 1 to 5 stars, with the rarer ingredients supposedly having more stars. But that is not the case, unfortunately. Most of the hard-to-find ingredients in this game are either 1-star or 2-star ingredients. And they haven’t sold those rare ingredients in the market either. Argh.

Fortunately, there is another Facebook application that can help with the ingredients trade: Restaurant City Market. You just select the ingredients you are willing to trade, the ingredients you need, and your current level. The database will show the users you can trade ingredients with. You can post your ingredients in your Facebook wall so that other players can see what ingredients you have for trading. Unfortunately, you have to update the ingredients list manually.

Oh well, I’m going back to the game to search for the elusive tomato.
