Da Vinci Code

Da Vinci CodeNice book. Crappy ending.

I bought this book because it is controversial. It talked about the so-called “wife” of Jesus Christ, which shook the very foundations of Christianity. It also included some sort of attack on the Opus Dei group. Geez, no wonder it became so controversial. And being a fan of ideas that defy the norm, I was hooked.

I am a big fan of mystery stories, and Dan Brown’s presentation of the mystery of the cryptex and its connection to the Holy Grail is enough to satisfy that craving. It was really a page-turner, and I finished the book in one sitting. And following Robert and Sophie in their travels enabled me to “travel” to Europe, without leaving the house. I had to admire Dan Brown for making an effort to do research on the Priory of Scion.

But after it was all over, I found the ending a bit crappy. In fact, when I finally finished the book, I threw it away out of frustration. Maybe I got my hopes up, and I didn’t expect that the ending would be so… standard.

Reading this book may affect one’s belief in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. I understand the position of the Church when they wanted to ban the book and the movie. But then, this is fiction. It is meant to entertain. It is up to the person who’s reading the book if he/she will allow it to change his/her beliefs. And I have to admit, the attack on the book even made it more famous. Reverse psychology is working for Dan Brown in this case.
